Medication Reviews

Patients on a repeat medication should see a doctor or practice nurse at least once a year. This is to review medications. A notification should appear on your repeat slip.

Some patients on certain medication will need to have regular blood tests. This is due to the medication prescribed.

Please ensure that you book an appropriate appointment to have this done. This will avoid unnecessary delays to further prescriptions.

Collections

Repeat prescriptions that are within the review date take 2 working days to process.

Repeat prescriptions that are past the review date will take up to 5 working days to process.

If you use a pharmacy service, it will take 5 working days before your medication is ready for collection.

Please ensure you allow enough time for this so that you do not run out of your medication.

Prescription Fees

Help with NHS costs

In England, the NHS dispenses around 90% of prescription items for free. This includes exemptions from charging for those on low incomes. For example:

  • those on specific benefits or through the NHS Low Income Scheme
  • those who are age exempt
  • those with certain medical conditions

More information is available at NHS Choices.

NHS Charges

These charges apply in England only. In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales prescriptions are free of charge.

  • Prescription (per item): £9.65
  • 12-month prepayment certificate (PPC): £111.60
  • 3-month PPC: £31.25

If you will have to pay for more than 4 prescription items in 3 months, or more than 14 items in 12 months, a PPC may be cheaper.

  • Telephone advice and order line 0845 850 0030
  • General Public - Buy or Renew a PPC On-line

There is further information about prescription exemptions and fees on the NHS website.

Wastage

The practice is working to reduce waste in the NHS. Only order the items on your repeat prescription that you are currently taking. If you have enough supplies of some of your medication at home, please only order the items that you need. Thank you.
